Biography: My name is Anita Gonzalez and I am 33 years old. I am a single parent of three wonderful children, Aaron, Jesenia, and Jaretze. I was born and raised in Mission, Texas. I am a sophomore at Michigan State University pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Social Work. Getting used to Michigan life has been difficult for me, Besides from moving to Michigan I am also going through the transaction of college life, I am a first time college student. Pursuing this is challenging for me, returning to school after 16 years from the classroom. It is sometimes intimidating to consider the idea of term paper deadlines, reading assignments and being called on by the professor in the classroom. Being a single mother has additional burdens that make pursuing a college degree feel impossible at times. Yet despite these challenges, I have set my mind to During the past years we have gone through a lot of changes that have made me realize that it was time for a change. On April 26, 2009, my father passed away leaving us with nothing to say. Since then my family and I have all gone through some very difficult times. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather, and was very much involved in the community. He always motivated us to get educated. But of course I was always lazy and preferred things the easy way rather than getting an education. It wasn’t until then that I realized that I have to accomplish what he always wanted. I decided that I would enroll in school. With the help of my sisters Andie and Angie, I was accepted into the College Assistance Migrant Program here at MSU. Now going on my second year, I am proud of myself for all I have accomplished. I am ready to take the steps necessary to educate myself and be a better role model for my children to look up to. I know with my new found attitude and dedication it will be possible. This something I want, there is nothing that will hold me back.
