| Biography: |
After being born in Mexico and immigrating to the United States, I have learned life is sometimes tough and it is the actions you take that can turn it around. When my family and I came to this country we not only struggled financially but socially as well. Here is a small glimpse into my life experiences:
I had just turned thirteen years old and was attending summer school in my hometown of Arvin, California, when my mother asked me to miss school that day so I could translate an Avon Products orientation. My mother only attended the third grade when she was dropped out of school so she could work with my grandfather in their town plaza in Guanajuato, Mexico and sell newspaper and magazines to help support the family. Years later, my mother emigrated to Arvin and was a farm labor-worker and a single mother trying to make ends meet. She was introduced to Avon by a lady who was nice enough to train me at my young age to complete the Avon orders for my mother since she could barely read and write. I began to be curious about Avon business and decided to take an Avon book to school and try to sell. Shortly, after I was called, “The Avon Lady” at school. By summer of 1993 I had become so committed to the business. I then hired sales representatives to sell for me and had my younger siblings help me ensemble the products while I did the order taking and distribution of the orders. I had a strict schedule to follow. Little did I know that Avon would provide such a monetary contribution impact to my family. I continued to do well in school and finished high-school in the top one percent of my graduating class with honors. I was accepted to the University California in Santa Barbara turning my Avon business to an end. Since I was the first in my family to attend a university it was very important to do well. My mother always taught me to strive for better without forgetting where I came from and most important helping others along the way.
During my undergraduate years I volunteered recruiting students with my similar background to the university and by my second year in college I was accepted to various study abroad programs in Spain, Costa Rica and Italy. That opportunity allowed me to explore many countries where I learned about the different cultures, politics and way of living. I feel proud of being the first in my family to complete a bachelor’s degree and being a Latina that breaks the typical Latina clichés. These experiences instilled in me the desire to become a professional business leader that can offer unparalleled management skills, business knowledge and techniques needed to make a difference in a company. Yet, I understand that the business world today is more complex. This complexity requires more education, and with that in mind, I am currently attending the Master’s of Business Administration program at University California in Riverside. A high academic record shows discipline, determination, and responsibility. However, an academic record does not show the struggles in a student’s life that can dramatically hinder the student’s performance. With the tough economic times I was currently let go from my job and facing unemployment. In my life, I have had many obstacles to overcome and experiences to learn from. My struggles in life have given me strength and made me more determined to achieve success. Whether it is helping my family in strenuous times, or understanding the feelings of culture shock in a foreign country, or helping others in the rapid economical changes we face or now completing graduate school. Always looking ahead, preparing myself, trying to strive for better.
